Pre-requisite Courses

Build a strong foundation for success.

The fall semester MSIS Core courses give students an understanding of business and technology. Once admitted, you must complete prerequisite courses before starting the MSIS Core courses. MSIS prerequisite courses are hosted at the Shidler College of Business, and end in mid-August. Choose your student status below to view options for fulfilling prerequisite requirements:

Prerequisites for non-MIS/CS/Engineering students:

    • Demonstrated ability to code in at least one programming language (e.g., PHP, C++, Python, Java) at an advanced-beginner level commensurate with an undergraduate course.

  • Bachelor's degree with following criteria:

    • Equivalencies to undergraduate MIS core curriculum (ITM352, 353, 354, 431) from an accredited 4-year college.

    • General business curriculum, including at least one course each in accounting (equivalent to ACC201 or ACC201) and finance (equivalent to BUS314)

Current Undergraduates at UH Manoa

Current IU students should contact the MSIS program office to discuss the most efficient path to prerequisite completion.

Current Undergradates at another U.S. University

With careful planning, you may be able to complete prerequisite courses at your undergraduate university. Contact the MSIS program to go over your prerequisite equivalency.

Bachelor's Degree holders living in the U.S.

Applicants who live in the United States (regardless of citizenship) have two options:

  • Take prerequisites at an AACSB- or ABET-accredited college or university. Contact the MSIS program office before class registration to ensure prerequisite equivalency.

  • Enroll in the MSIS Jumpstart program. Completion satisfies all prerequisites. Students will be awarded a non-credit certificate in business and technology. The Jumpstart program is typically offered in mid-May for U.S. degree holders and early June for non-U.S. degree holders. MSIS Core prerequisites include online courses, as well as in-residence courses hosted at the Shidler College of Business in July. More details regarding Jumpstart registration and payment are sent to applicants after acceptance of the admission offer.

Undergraduates and degree holders living outside of U.S.

Undergraduate degree requirements at your home institution must be completed no later than May 15 of the year you are applying for the MSIS program. Applicants currently residing outside of the U.S. must complete MSIS Core prerequisite courses by enrolling in the MSIS Jumpstart program. Completion satisfies all prerequisites. Students will be awarded a non-credit certificate in business and technology by Shidler College of Business.

The Jumpstart program is typically offered to U.S. degree holders in mid-May and non-U.S. degree holders in early June. The prerequisite courses for the Jumpstart program are taught in-residence at the Kelley School of Business in July. More details regarding Jumpstart registration and payment are sent to applicants after acceptance of the admission offer.
